Workshop: Rag Tag Bags

Last Saturday, held a workshop at Green Mother Goods in Boone, NC. Fun, creative & delightful Green Mother Goods is a delighful shop specializing in handcrafted, encironmentally sensitive goods for body & home. At the workshop, we transformed tote-bags from thrift shop finds to creataive carry-alls for froceries, library books, and back-to-school. suggested donation of $9 to cover materials used in transforming your bag from ordinary to extra-ordinary.

Workshop attendees will make one re-vamped tote-bag.

Bring $9 and a tote-bag if you have one…You know the kind, the one that are given away at conventions and grocery stores or any old totebag that is lying around the house. If you don’t have one, there will be a selection to choose from at the workshop. This casual work shop is open to children & adults; we will work with paint & stencils to re-create these bags from ordinary to something extra-ordinary, from plain & mass-produced to creative, expressive, and functional totes for groceries, for library books, for back to school.

Flim Flam Circus & Variety Show started as a community-based art project interested in community involvement and recycled materials. Artists and costume designers, Julie Argue and Kehren Barbour, made 120 garments over a 3-week-residency at Goose Hall in Tallahasse, Florida that culminated with an event at 621 Gallery in Railroad Square Art Park we called “The Flim Flam Circus and Variety Show”. The FFC & VC was a fun-filled event with 3 bands and a variety of local talent; with about 200 attendees and entertainment provided by community members including a juggler, a dog doing tricks, and an interpretive dance troupe, among others, the party was a really delightful affair. We ended up raising a good amount of money for the gallery and we were successful linking facets of community who might not have known each other by getting people to think about ideas realted to recycled garments being fun & accessible (and very affordable). The Flim Flam Circus is interested in awakeing and connecting community through live performance as means to remind people to engage in art activities, to consider cause & effect of their actions through play and creatiivty. J. Argue is a muralist who works with public art projects involving prisoners and margenalized populations in the southeastern United States. K. Barbour recently left San Francisco where she worked as a properties artisan and designer for dance and experimental performance. As costume designers and founders of the Flim Flam Circus, Julie and Kehren are interested in the alchemic ability of art to change lives.

Flim Flam Circus and Variety Show was made possible support from the community. We would like to thank all who made this event possible: delightful performers, sound man Derek Jones, tent provided by 621 Gallery (Thanks, Denise!), objects were loaned by Zan and the Other Side Vintage, Gail Bibisi, and all of the volunteers and models who helped make this event a success. Much love and appreciation!
